UK MP and musician to appear in Second Life Concert to Help End Seal Hunt

05/10/2008 - 15:00
05/10/2008 - 17:00

This just in:

9 May 2008 – Animal lovers and Second Lifers are being encouraged to attend a live virtual event to help end commercial seal hunting – with guest appearances by a US musician and a UK politician.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) concert on Saturday 10 May (3pm SLT & 11pm BST) will feature singer/songwriter Juel Resistance and Labour Member of Parliament for Bristol East, Kerry McCarthy. Second Life's residents will have the opportunity to hear about IFAW’s campaign to help stop the cruel Canadian seal hunt. Residents will be able to view and hear video recorded by IFAW monitors during the 2008 seal hunt which began in March, interact with IFAW avatar Daisy Meadowbrook and take action in support of calls for a Europe-wide ban on seal products.

Kerry McCarthy MP, who will speak at the event, said: “I strongly support IFAW’s work to put an end to this brutal hunt. The annual killing of more than a quarter of a million seals, mostly for their fur, is simply unacceptable.

“An EU-wide ban on the trade in seal products is a vital step to help end this hunt and make sure that Europe plays no further part in this cruelty. I’m very happy to lend my voice in support of that effort.”

Second Life Residents can attend the event on Saturday May 10 at 3PM SLT (PST) by following the link below:

Those who are not already Residents of Second Life can sign up at no cost via the www.secondlife.com site. For more information on IFAW’s Stop the Seal Hunt campaign, please visit: www.stopthesealhunt.org or www.ifaw.org.

Community Forums on Mobilizing SL Residents to Support Global Justice at International Justice Center

03/26/2008 - 13:00

At the launch of the International Justice Center in SL last Thursday, the lead prosecutor of the International Criminal Court asked the following question to the Second Life community:

"How do you believe we can use this [Second Life] system to improve understanding of this idea and mobilize people and resources in the world to protect those who have nothing... This could be a very interesting tool. You have ideas how we can use this new tool?"

Activists, educators, non-profit organizers and the interested public are invited to a couple of Community Open Forums we are holding at the Global Kids' International Justice Center to discuss how to effectively and strategically use this new tool for public education and action on global human rights concerns. The Community Forums will take place this Wednesday at 8AM and 1PM SLT /PDT in the Amphitheater of the Justice Center (click here to teleport).

We have some tentative plans for the Center in the near future including the following:

* Live Video from the ICC: As the first major trial at the ICC moves forward, we have the potential to host at the Center live viewings of trials and hearings over the next months. These might be supplemented by commentators and experts explaining why a particular procedure or hearing is important.

* Online Chats with People in Countries of Concern to the ICC: We are developing a tool that connects SMS text messaging to Second Life that can enable people in low-bandwidth environments to connect with people in virtual worlds via text chat. Some possibilities include holding online discussions with people in Uganda and the Congo to talk about the role of the ICC in their countries.

SLUrl: IFAW Island (111,179,37)

From the official press release the Wandering Penguin came across:

Coinciding with the island’s launch, IFAW will hold a live concert on Thursday March 27th at 1:00 PM SLT featuring two popular Second Life bands: AngeyLaura Houston aka Laura Angey and the UKD Project from Italy. The concert will take place in IFAW Island’s African Savannah space. The event is open to all Second Life residents, and there is a suggested donation of $100 Linden dollars for which donors will receive a virtual IFAW T-shirt.

“IFAW is constantly seeking ways to connect with individuals through their preferred means. We are very pleased to be offering this virtual resource to our supporters and to those who may not be as familiar with the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s activities across the physical world,” said Cassandra Koenen, IFAW’s Director of Online Campaigns and Marketing.

IFAW Island offers visitors a virtual African savannah space with species information on elephant populations and background on poaching, illegal trade and migration. Additionally there is a theater presentation space for multimedia campaign updates, a skybox with photo galleries, trade maps and donation tools.

“We see IFAW Island as an important extension of our online presence and an exciting way to communicate our desire to make the real world a better place for animals and people,” stated Ms. Koenen.

Second Life Avatars can visit the space by searching “IFAW Island” in the Map tool.
