The new code monkey around here - who we are calling 'Bob' until a better name is found - has been working on customizing the Drupal event module for use related to Second Life, but came to realize that it needs to evolve. Bob running amok on fermented banana juice may not be the best thing for a good service.
As such, any authenticated user can post an event on this site right now - remember to toss in your SLUrls. The categories are really not as descriptive as they are planned to be - but to be adaptive, you can post a comment here or contact us with an email to nobodyfugaziATyour2ndplaceDOTcom.
Why
The reasoning is that the present Second Life event structure kind of... sucks. For one, if you're having a sale all week, you should be able to post it ONCE instead of all week. People should be able to find stuff by a calendar, etc.
The present system implemented here is NOT the system we designed, but it is the system that you can help design. It is a free service, and it is expected that it will eventually be available in HUD form as well (sort of like SLBrowser - perhaps even in conjunction with...).
With less need to game the system, it is hoped that people won't abuse the system. Of course, some people will and that will screw it up for everyone - but this is a part of the development cycle. If it gets abused, Bob will deal with it. If it is severely abused, it will become a paid service for people. And if it isn't abused, it will remain free for everyone.
What Is Abuse?
Well, spamming the events is one way to abuse the system. If you're having an event all day, there is no need to post more than one event for the day. Simple, common sense. We're sure that someone will find more creative ways to abuse the system, but we'll deal with that as it happens. Code monkey love as appropriate.
Will It Be Popular?
Who knows. Who cares? I'm just sort of tired of using the constrained and spammed Second Life event interface.
