The Denmark based Grundfos Group will be entering Second Life - and according to their related press release, they are approaching Second Life with a learning perspective and a time limit of 6 months for their island. It makes sense to have an exit strategy.
From the press release:
...Grundfos is primarily entering the three dimensional universe with the purpose of learning.
”We want to examine all the possibilities of the computer made worlds. The natural thing for us is focus on sustainable development, and therefore we have built our island with environmental issues and energy consumption as main topics. We want as much interaction as possible. In several places visitors are invited to support projects that, on a long view, will result in initiatives in the real world. For instance, users of Second Life are invited to buy virtual SQ Flex installations and thereby contribute to donating a real SQ Flex installation for a water supply project in Africa in the real world”, Mr Koldbæk explains...
I'm intrigued by their virtual SQ Flex installations; I've been toying with electrical motor simulation within Second Life myself. Most people would probably not be interested in these things, except for the guys who wander around tool stores trying to find reasons to buy stuff. But in the developing world, those submersed pumps can and do come in handy.
I took a look around for their island, but if it is there it wasn't too obvious yet. If anyone else sees it first, ping me. I want to go check out their stuff due to real world curiosity. Plus, mundane technologies aren't well expressed within Second Life - and I'm curious how that will work out.
Some smart non profit within Second Life might find a nice partner here. Maybe.

Grundfos opening event schedule is now up...
Sorry for the shameless plugging, but the island is now open, and it'll be holding a series of events later today. For more info on what Grundfos is planning to do in Second Life, you can read a bit more about their press release here.
Thanks, Gwyneth!
And no, I don't see it as a shameless plug. I'll try to be there for at least parts of it. :-)
SQFlex etc.
The pump display etc. should be there soon. The island officially opens on Wednesday I think it is, and there were some last minute tweaks to the donation system for both trees and pumps as RL financial changes became integrated into the system.
I Look Forward To Seeing It.
And I hope the builder of the pump display is around too. Would love to share some ideas with the builder as well. :-)
