When I first wrote about Italian IBMers to strike this month, I fully expected that this would become a non-issue - I expected [w:IBM] would address the issue quickly to deal with what could be a true first within a [w:virtual world]. It seems that this is not the case - UNI Global Union is urging participation from its folds:
During the talks to renew IBM’s Italian internal collective agreement, the works council, supported by the majority of IBM Italy employees, asked for a small salary increase. IBM responded by cancelling their "productive results benefit", resulting in a loss of €1000 per year for each employee. For a company that wants to lead in corporate social responsibility, this is unacceptable.
RSU (Rappresentenza Sindacale Unitaria) decided to organise the first virtual strike ever in Second Life with the help of UNI (Union Network International). It is time for IBM, a company with one of the highest profits, to share some of the fruits with its workforce....
This is the first I had heard of UNI Global Union, so I read more about them here. It seems to be an interesting attempt to consolidate unions in a global manner, which seems like a difficult task (to say the least).
It will be interesting to see how the strike will be done. Obviously, we would expect it to happen in a public area - probably not on IBM 'property' where people can be conveniently ejected. I'm betting on the Reuters office, or some other news agency.
