Now That's One Expensive Boner!
While Redux was searching for an all together different item, She came across this slexchange listing and shared the link with me. It is a "Skeleton standing avatar sized partially linked" as the item title states next to a picture thats well...Nothing a photographer would ever brag about or the picture I would use to convince someone my item was valuable. The item is described as follows.
The MOST complex and anatomically accurate skeleton ever made in SL. It represents weeks worth of work. It is made entirely of sculpts,
1 bone = 1 prim.
This is the smaller partially linked version.
Come see it in person at the ARC Automotive Research Center , just North of the IBM islands.
I invite serious proposals (see sticker price). I am looking to use this skeleton and my other projects to promote myself in SL and to help me achieve the greater goals of Virtual Education.
I am extremely approachable and love to discuss SL and ways to make it a richer environment.
What makes this listing any different from all the rest of the crap on slexchange? It has a 6 million dollar price tag. Over $21,000 US Dollars. My first conclusion, it's just a way to get free advertising on slexchange and bring a few people to his island, and so far thats worked because I found myself there. I can see the huge skeleton in the distance along with all of the other items Ollie Kubrick has listed on the site for sale. The skeleton is cool, not sure about 6mil cool, but neat for sure. Ollie is standing there in the islands center so I decide I just gotta ask what's with the price tag.
[17:16] You: So is the 6K skeleton just a way to get free advertisng and pull a few people to the island?
[17:23] Ollie Kubrick: Hi Sarah, sry was afk
[17:24] Sarah Nerd: I figured
[17:25] Sarah Nerd: So whats up with a 6mil listings?
[17:25] Sarah Nerd: Just for advertising purpose?
[17:25] Ollie Kubrick: well, sort of but thats not the whole story
[17:26] Ollie Kubrick: I mean how do u determine the value of something? Why is a painting worth 43 million dollars and the hard day labour of a peasant worth 3 dollars?
[17:27] Sarah Nerd: supply/demand artist popularity, Rarity
[17:27] Ollie Kubrick: in virt space the only determining factor is what value u place on an object
[17:28] Ollie Kubrick: popularity? so all value is transient
[17:28] Sarah Nerd: And the supply and demand, and competitor pricing
[17:28] Ollie Kubrick: So does nothing ever have an intrinsic value to u?
[17:28] Sarah Nerd: sythia veal makes an amazing skeleton avatar
[17:29] Sarah Nerd: Well nothing I value at or over 6 million other than my entire company as a whole
[17:29] Ollie Kubrick: So u think that u have a good enough sense of quality that u know what things are worth?
[17:30] Sarah Nerd: I have a good enough sense of average fair value of items within second life
[17:30] Sarah Nerd: And I dought you realistically priced an item at 6 million
[17:30] Ollie Kubrick: hmm that seems prety subjective
[17:31] Ollie Kubrick: Im not knocking u, u have ur opinion and that's yours
[17:31] Sarah Nerd: And you yours
[17:31] Sarah Nerd: I just saw the listing thought it was off and considered blogging it
[17:31] Ollie Kubrick: realism within an unreal environment seems contradictory to me
[17:32] Ollie Kubrick: basically my whole premise for SL is do what is not real
[17:32] Ollie Kubrick: so if a price is unreal then to me thats good
[17:32] Ollie Kubrick: if an object has never been seen b4 then that is also good
[17:33] Ollie Kubrick: The Sl environment suffers from too much obvious nterpretation of reality
[17:33] Ollie Kubrick: and my goal is to challenge that at every opportunity
[17:33] Sarah Nerd: Unrealistic, but if it makes you happy and achieves yours goals thats great. And do you consider it an object that has never been seen before in sl?
[17:33] Ollie Kubrick: Yes
[17:34] Sarah Nerd: Let me hunt down sythias
[17:34] Ollie Kubrick: Especially at the time when it was made
[17:34] Ollie Kubrick: But maybe u should lok a bit deeper
[17:34] Sarah Nerd: Well I took a good look at the large one located on your property
[17:35] Ollie Kubrick: I spent 2 solid weeks 200 hrs the 2nd day after sculprs were introduced into SL, to make something which was entirely anatomically correct and corresponded one bone to one prim
[17:36] Ollie Kubrick: For Sythia to equal that she would have had to do the same and my investigation showed that there was no one even close
[17:36] Sarah Nerd: So do you feel your work is more valuable than say this listings creator. http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=...
[17:37] Sarah Nerd: or this one that claims realism http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=...
[17:37] Ollie Kubrick: See I think comparison is a losers game. I make according to what I think should be done and try to push the limits everywher. If someone else does that then I admire them, if they dont I dont
[17:38] Ollie Kubrick: spending ur time wondering if ur better or worse than someone else ensures that u will be worse
[17:40] Ollie Kubrick: Its funny that u give these examples cuz one of the Artists came and was so blown away by wha I had done
[17:40] Ollie Kubrick: He literally couldnt believe it possible
[17:40] Ollie Kubrick: But actually I have gotten used to that. People say that about what I do all the time.
[17:40] Sarah Nerd: I see your angle, But can't believe you felt this item was worth 22 thousand us dollars or that anyone would actually pay that amount. I was just interested in your motives for listing that high.
[17:41] Ollie Kubrick: But that is only cuz I think that I see what others seem to miss
[17:41] Sarah Nerd: And would you mind your comments name and being posted
[17:42] Ollie Kubrick: I have already done 2 sims and have started my 3rd working for a large bank
[17:42] Ollie Kubrick: Oh not at all, please feel free to say whatever u want about my work good or bad
[17:43] Sarah Nerd: Well Thank You for your time and response
[17:44] Ollie Kubrick: Sure np, hope I could clarify a bit for u my position
My honest opinion in all of this and on his work? Ollie obviously does have talent. More than me....absolutely! More than several other gifted artists in second life..No not in my opinion. Nothing that would place him in the 6 million dollar range, although he does seem to think pretty highly of himself which generally puts me off of people. You can find highly detailed works by artists like Light Waves totally free. If he felt his skeleton was as amazing as he describes than pricing at 1L would be just as "unreal" as pricing at 6mil and then people could actually get some use of it in our world. I don't think he completely believes all of his own opinions on pricing and value considering he lists several of his items as "On sale" or "half price". In the end I think my original gut reaction was right. The 6 million price tag is nothing more than free advertising, and it works.

P.S. I will admit that I was very excited to see his shark thats more reasonably priced at 1999L. It was very detailed and moved very much like a real shark and if I ever find a place that I can use a shark like this I'll be buying one for sure.

That is a nice looking
That is a nice looking shark. Huge :) Put that in the water at Nerdagara Falls and I don't think there would be room for the sub. Or the water. If that little tiny avatar next to the shark actually shows the shark's actual size :)
Oh, and interesting place to stand to show the skeleton's size. :)
Well, he got free press. :-)
I think he's just trying to be an eccentric artist. The difference between insane and eccentric is - oh - about 6 million Linden.
I'll have to go look at it, but I'm honestly very tired.
Arrogant.
Ok I didn't start out very nice with Ollie. When seeing his 6 million dolar price tag I was quick to leave a response in the slexchange item discussion forum...

crudeness of your comment exposes your obvious inability to discern
quality. I dont expect you can understand or appreciate the value of
what I offer.
Well the more I thought about his response, the more I thought about it and only one word came to my mind about Ollie.
arrogant
One entry found for arrogant.
Main Entry: ar·ro·gant

1 : exaggerating or disposed to exaggerate one's own worth or importance often by an overbearing manner <an arrogant official>
My impression...
Not to defend the L$6mil price tag, but if I had run across that listing, I am not so sure I would have focused on that issue, for two reasons.
1. The seller states: I invite serious proposals (see sticker price). So, that to me would mean he would accept payment of far less (hopefully), and the 6mil amount was to help dissuade anyone from offering such low prices as L$25, for example?
2. He further states: I am looking to use this skeleton and my other projects to promote myself in SL.... Ah, there's the rub. Looks like an artist's attempt for recnognition after all, and not so much about selling this product.
I like how you describe him as 'arrogant' and he describes himself as I am extremely approachable . Seems like one of you must be wrong... hehe
Personally, for an ad listing with such a hefty pricetag, I would hope for more info in the description - such as, does it represent each bone in the human body? What does "partially linked" mean - that if I rez it, I will have to assemble it myself? Ouch. I knew I should've paid more attention to where I left my Gray's Anatomy book...
