Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

I didn't realise that the destination guide had arrived, the apparent heir to the throne of Showcase, but having noticed it I went to the hot spots and noticed "Lesbian Paradise" at the top of the pile. Now what could a lesbian paradise have that was so worthy to get it into a public guide to Second Life? Would it be the builds? The entertainment? The design?

Well no, apparently it seems to be the ability to throw male avatars to corners of the sim with "You are not allowed into the destination" messages and then watch the screen flicker and find you're having a great deal of trouble teleporting back out for some reason.

Really, what on earth is this place doing on the destination guide? I mean what exactly are they trying to promote here with a place that is aimed at women but doesn't allow a male even a cursory visit to see what they're doing so well that merits inclusion? Orbiting an avatar within seconds of landing sure isn't promoting much positive and the silly thing of it is that if I go back as a female alt then I don't feel the wrath of exclusion for merely wanting a peek at a place promoted on Linden Lab's website.

Which is what I did because now I'm curious and I take the cursory glance around I originally wanted and find a club and mall and to be fair it's an active venue so it's laggy. The mall contains artwork that should only be found on adult rated regions but that's no real surprise as that happens at plenty of mature places.

So there's nothing inherently evil about this place, there's nothing amazingly great about it, so what is it doing in the destination guide when it's going to attract the wrong kind of attention? The place is ban happy because it is a place that by its very design probably needs to be ban happy, however is this really the sort of place that should be getting promotion from the official website? Are there no better examples of communities or projects aimed at women? Surely this isn't the best Second Life has to offer those looking for more female friendly locations is it?

Shouldn't places in the destination guide be more inclusive than exclusive anyway or is this some sort of "We cater to all tastes" kind of idea?

Wait...

Isn't "Lesbian" and Adult-Only word that should be filtered from all search-results and listings to begin with?

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

"Now what could a lesbian paradise have that was so worthy to get it into a public guide to Second Life? " Did you really not *know* what was going on in a place named "Lesbian Paradise"?  You didn't know they all ban male avatars to reduce the number of blatant, leering voyeurs?

I bet you read Hustler for the articles, too... :-)

I suspect that how you get listed in "Hot Spots" is you have a lot of traffic. And the listing says "Lesbian Paradise: Meet new friends and dance the night away at Lesbian Paradise, a community for women only."

Funny to hear a guy talk about the "wrath of exclusion", especially while conflating "female friendly" and lesbianism. We must be sure that the destination guide includes only destinations approved of by men.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

I actually wouldn't expect somewhere in the destination guide to be a place that's full of leering males to be perfectly honest. I was hoping for something with a bit more zip and vigour, maybe some intelligent discussion regarding issues facing lesbians, something that has a bit more than a club and mall and a security team who would be AR'd for griefing if they were a general security device anywhere else.

I certainly didn't imply that places need to be approved by men, but I would still like to know what makes the place suitable for the destination guide and whether places that are exclusive should be the sort of places in the destination guide.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

Is there really something so terrible about there being such a really popular place that is exclusive to women/lesbians? I mean really, this just sounds like you're jealous that you didn't think of the idea yourself.  Sounds like one of those little kids that doesn't get invited to the popular kids birthday party, so he whines/complains about it.

Why can't an exclusive place be in the destination guide.  It's a popular place for women/lesbians to go hang out, have fun, dance, and listen to music. If you are really so curious, why not contact the owner and ask for an interview instead of breaking the rules of the place and pretending to be a woman so you could get in.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

No I'm not jealous of a place that requires such a security team, I can assure you, seems like a lot of hassle to me and I didn't break any rules, I went with my female character, which I'd wager you'd find plenty of being played by males. If I go to Tombstone or 1920's Berlin Project there are rules and dress codes but they place you in an area that explains this when you land, they don't eject everyone who enters who doesn't fit the bill right away.

The destination guide is a place that advertises Second Life, having a place that is so unwelcoming is not a good advert.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

The name Lesbian Paradise is perhaps a misnomer.  LP is a club for girls who want to be in the company of other girls and to be free from the often snide, bigoted and crude comments of certain men who do not appear to accept that girls can be quite happy in the company of other girls, without necessarily having to be lesbians. Unfortunately, our security officers do not have the time or resources to ascertain the motives of those males who arrive after failing to understand what "females only" actually means. We do not hate men, we just do not want them at LP.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

I think the owner is right.
I went into one of the lesbian clubs using a female character for some good old fashioned leering. Not much lesbian action happening.
After a few minutes I clued in that these REAL PEOPLE just wanted to hang out and engage in some conversation and friendship instead of cater to the titillations of some men (including myself).

To be honest, now that I had a glimpse of the culture I'm embarrassed by having a peep show mentality.

I'm fairly sure there are many other men who start on second life with a peep show mentality too and that, people, is the reason for the ban.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

Yes it's supposed to be female friendly, I pointed that out. However none of this explains what a place that needs to operate such a security system is doing in the destination guide, it seems to be there purely because it excludes men, which in my view is hardly a merited inclusion. I have no beef with someone wanting a place away from leering men, although you're kidding yourself if you think only RL females are going there.

My point never was about the place being female only, my point was that I don't see why it's in the destination guide, a publically promoted resource on the official website.

"I was hoping for something with a bit more zip and vigour, maybe some intelligent discussion regarding issues facing lesbians"

Yeah that's what lesbians do in paradise - talk about issues...

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

Considering it's in the destination guide I'd expect a bit more to it than being a club and mall.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

You know watching cartoons mashing on each other really turns most males on..................please grow up.
Granted it would appear most of the throng on SL are barely out of the Teen grid and their preoccupation of sex from their lack of occupation with sex might lead to some of the nonsense one sees while in-world. After the first nanosecond of seeing badly animated poorly rendered avatars engaged in an approximation of the carnal act the charm goes away. So much for my glowing endorsement of any sex-based region or product.
I think the author raised some valid points. If you want to man bash and be a troll.. have at it the only point you made is to prove you have a pointy head.

Re: Destination guide shows bad side of Second Life

I think that what the author wants to point out is that there shouldn't be places that discriminates against a user in any form, male or female or furry or non-human, or a child avatar, in the Destination Guide, only general users welcoming places, so that everyone would be allowed to enjoy all the places recommended.
