Many people in secondlife, especially people who are active in the land market are well aware of LandBarron Merlin. He is spoken of often on the forums and websites that focus a lot on Secondlife. Merlin is the infamous landbot suspected of the current bait and switch schemes and well known for preying on known land listing errors of fellow residents and land errors possibly caused by sl bugs and lag. He buys land at a fraction of its real value, often large parcels for 1L because the person listing intended to sell it to a friend standing right beside them. While the former owners beg and plead with Merlin to please return the land, he re-sells the land making huge real dollar profits at the expense of others. He has made thousands of US dollars just off of a few well known large land "steals" her has gotten. Although his actions are morally and ethically wrong, Merlin hides safely under SecondLifes terms of service. Linden Labs stand has always been to stay out of land transactions no matter how much money was at stake for the resident, or if a bug was possibly the cause of the loss. That stand may now come back to bite Linden Labs in the ass.
Recently I got an instant message in world from a reporter of a second life web-magazine. She asked me a question that informed me of current actions being taken in second Life that may have an effect on Merlin and Linden Labs current stand. Her question was this:
"'I'm currently writing a news story for the on Landbaron Merlin's latest victim, and how, despairing at the lack of action by LL, they have reported the matter to the FBI. They believe that LL, by not sorting out the fault in their land sale system, are responsible for providing a means for crooks to come into SL and take advantage of people, and therefore they are abetting RL criminals and should be punished by RL law. They want other victims to follow suit and file complaints with their federal governments. Do you think this is a wise course of action? Or do you have any advice for how victims should combat these incidents? Is rallying LL fruitless? If you get time today I would really appreciate your comments on this important subject. Thanks very much Sarah."
While this raises a lot of questions about where the line between real life and secondlife is drawn, I'm glad to see that Karma may finally come back to Merlin or Linden Labs. If anything I hope these actions help raise awareness among the Lindens about the seriousness of Merlin's actions or about Landbots in general. Meanwhile, I'm going to sit back and watch the show.
