Your2ndPlace.com Revamp Next Month.

Posted in

Just a general note that, in the background, I have been working on things related to the code here on the site on one of my sandbox sites and that I expect at this point that there will be some upgrades happening by mid-April. I'm not doing all the work, mind you- the new engine under the hood will be Drupal, and will include some nice community modules. I have been beta testing 6.0 on another site, and working with that engine for a few months, off and on.

New functionality expected will include (but is not limited to):

  • Better event functionality for adding events. I'm not pleased with the present kludged interface, and while no one else has complained it bugs me. I know it can be better.
  • New look and feel. Hopefully better (guess who gets to judge?)
  • 'Backlink' functionality where one can see what other posts on the site link to a particular post. For technical people, this works like an internal trackback on the site.
  • Blocking of anonymous comments with links in them, which is the only real reason that comments are presently moderated.
  • Captcha functionality is something I am considering, once again.
  • Comment Subscribe functionality
  • Contact Links for the authors
  • Internationalization, with embedded automatic translation links - a pet peeve of mine that I haven't gotten around to...
  • Some other code that still has to leap from my fingertips, which I hope will either make you happy or will sit in the background and make me happy...

Since this is actually being done on a super-uper-duper server, the upgrade will be Q&A'd on the mirror site and should only take, at most, 30 minutes to drop in place. Don't expect Your2ndPlace.com to go away for months like that other site.

If you have ideas of what you would like to see - authors and readers alike - toss it in the comments. I won't promise to be able to do everything, but this is your chance to sound off about stuff you like, stuff you don't like, stuff you would like to see, etc.

Ooh

There's quite a lot going on there and I'll be interested to see these changes that's for sure. Forums I'm sure you know can be an absolute nightmare but what's the worst that could happen there?

Quick Blog Posts

Often I've thought of posting something, but didn't feel like making a blog post, because a post is usually a few paragraphs, (was too busy or lazy or something), so end up not posting anything...

How about a side bar or something for a quick "Speed Post" for a quick fast short post?

Like get a domain for $10 for the year with blogger and its free hosting included. or
receive calls and post voicemail with your blog http://www.grandcentral.com/ (USA numbers)

often we all find cool sites and maybe could just do a quick post about it, or quick news type thing, anyways,

Something like that........quick fast blog post section.

Actually...

The site already has email->post functionality in it, but I've kept it under wraps for now due to size limitations. We could do something like that, but it would really skew the layout of the front page.

I like the idea of the sidebar. I think that can be done - I'm sure it can. It is a good idea.

Sidenote: Here's the thing: If you don't write enough, you don't get ads next to your post. So those quick posts may not actually generate revenue for you at all.

April 1

I'm not sure I like the idea of forums here.

The reason is - moderating forums is really a headache. In my opinion, blogs are forums in and of themselves - and since anyone who wishes to blog here can (as long as they aren't evil), it doesn't seem like a major issue to me. For google ads impressions, nothing is better than having a few trolls around - but I'd like to not be that site, if you know what I mean. Plus, there are so many forum sites out there already - would it really be useful?

I think that they could be, in a certain context. But that's something that I'm pondering and won't discuss publicly at this point. :-)

If enough people ask for forums, I can always enable them - they are available right now; all I have to do is click a toggle and we magically have forums.

Sounds like a cool revamp,

Sounds like a cool revamp, and I'm excited about the new features like contact info. Thanks for always working so hard so that the rest of us have a place to call our blog home!

hehe.

Well, it is something that keeps me from being too naughty. :-)

But yeah, there's a lot of stuff I want to do with the site. I really want to toss forums up here too, but there are so many forum sites I think it might just be silly to do that.

And... don't thank me so much. All of you are the reason people come here, including me. I just work here. :P
