It's time for Wandering Penguin to establish a Base of Penguinations, so this means doing the unthinkable.
It means actually searching for land on the mainland. A small 512m2 parcel. But it isn't always simple, and a lot of newbies (who didn't read this ebook) get trapped with bad land because they don't know any better. Funny cut land, ad parcels cut in the middle, all sorts of nonsense out there that the 'official Second Life' books don't tell you about. It's as if people don't want to tell you about this stuff.
Shame on those SL pundits who don't know land scam basics. CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-P, or View->Property Lines, and the world becomes a scary place.
It wasn't pretty. Here are some examples I found last night that are filed under "NOT WANT", with subtitles for English speaking humanoids:

The second people start handing out stuff as soon as you land, bad juju. In fact, if they aren't even on the parcel, you could abuse report them for spamming.

Notice the ugly little parcels cut here. Looks like FrankenLinden cut this up, but it's really just low life no reputation land dealers. Stay away! Do Not Want!

Blech. Smaller parcels on poorly landscaped land. This is a trap. Do Not Want!

Just plain ugly. Newbie trap. Do not want!

Wandering penguin thinks some people think land is a jigsaw puzzle of oddly cut plots. It doesn't have to be. DO NOT WANT!

Snow! Penguins like snow! But Purple Cow must be smoking Crack if Purple Cow expects to sell Wandering Penguin to buy this ugly funny cut piece of land. Crack smoking purple cows! Do Not Want!!!

Ban lines AND badly cut parcels nearby. Do NOT want. Ban lines are bad neighbors who are passively rude and obnoxious.

Wandering Penguin does NOT want ads near his nest. Wandering Penguin IM'd VSTEX about their ad and they said they never paid Tyrian Camillo for the advertising. Crack smoking ad sellers. DO NOT WANT!

Bad ad cuts, bad landscaping AND Spam? DO NOT WANT!!!
Wandering penguin went to sleep last night, perturbed that he couldn't find a nice 512m2 parcel - but slept well knowing he didn't get suckered into buying THOSE plots...

In addition to CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-P
try using CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-9 with a decent draw distance. This really clears up what is around you.
Math Question: What is 3 + 3?
Dear Wandering Penguin,
I really enjoyed reading your article and hope you find your Penguination base :)
The following, in no way is meant to be a plug..if you are interested I'll offer a discount for some land I hold in Bermuda (sim edge/North Islandia) which is of standard 512sqm shape.
I'd IM you directly but am still at work.

Thanks, man, but the wandering penguin has found a spot for penguinations already. He's building something wacky there as he has time. :-D

Ad plots
I've seen a couple of ad plots recently, owned by the ninjas or Arbor Project where they say they will transfer them free or for a very low fee if you join them to a neighbouring plot, so it's always worth seeing who owns those little plots.
If any of them are for sale for a high fee though, run away.
Generally the first page of
Generally the first page of the mainland listings is pure crap.
Some bargains there too though
I've found it's best to take a look at the first page just in case. I generally only look at land if it's 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 but some half decent plots come up. This is where humans have an advantage over bots.
Flat rock land gets a bad press.
VSTEX advertising
VSTEX does not use third parties for advertising. When they started, we had a paid audio advertising campaign on WJUV and that's about it.
The only VSTEX billboards anyone should ever see are the ones placed exclusively on football (soccer) fields of the secondfootball.com circuit, plus the ones you may find on our own island.
We invite everyone spotting inworld a VSTEX billboard or graphic advert to contact us providing a SLUrl or the general coordinates.
