Awards? Bah. Hit Them In The Wallet
Submitted by Nobody Fugazi on Tue, 07/17/2007 - 22:11.Linden Lab is giving out contributor awards. Sounds nice, it is good that they are recognizing the hard work and dedication which has been demonstrated BUT...
Why not hit the folks in the wallet? Nothing says, 'We appreciate you lots' more than some cash. Sure, a Macbook Pro might be nice, but there are those incidental costs like food and other human addictions.
Kind of like a software bounty system, you know? "You help us fix our code, and we help you"
Instead of...
"If you work on code and lots of people support you we'll toss you a computer which will be outdated in 18 months."
Sweeten the deal. Dig into those little pockets. Pay the open source people involved a few bucks. It won't kill you, and you may build a project which will withstand people leaving to work on other things. Landbots might even become obsolete if it becomes more profitable to work on the code for other reasons.
Software bounties. Seriously. I may not be firing up my compiler to work on stuff but after almost 20 years in code mines, I'd love to see the folks who are get something that they can buy stuff with. Just think, if you fire one lawyer you might be able to afford a lot more changes. :-)
