Linden Lab Ejects Woodbury University
Submitted by Nobody Fugazi on Sun, 07/01/2007 - 12:50.Picking up on Pixeleen Mistral's story, Woodbury University Island Destroyed, it is hard not to revisit some of the questions that members of the community have been asking for quite some time.
The key Linden Lab response, as quoted from Pixeleen's article:
...Tizzers Foxchase: (Saved Sun Jul 1 12:19:36 2007) Linden Lab has continued to find inappropriate uses of the Second Life region "Woodbury University" under your control. On the 16th of April, you were informed of problems with the activities taking place in the region. Many members of the Woodbury University group (which controls the region) have been detected before and after that date causing severe problems in Second Life, in violation of the terms of service. These problems include incidents of grid attacks, racism and intolerance, persistent harassment of other residents, and crashing the Woodbury University region itself while testing their abusive scripts. Due to the ongoing problems, Linden Lab has no option but to immediately close the Woodbury University region. If you believe that this notice has been sent in error, or that the details of this incident have not been adequately examined, please address your concerns in an e-mail to abuse-manager@lindenlab.com Sincerely yours, Customer Support Linden Lab 945 Battery Street San Francisco, CA
A lack of transparency in the Abuse Report system makes this very difficult to assess from a community standpoint - something which I have written so often that I'm tired of it (but I will keep mentioning it). Further, it demonstrates that Linden Lab apparently does hold land owners responsible for what people do on their land - something which groups of community members could not get a straight answer from Robin Linden on during her office hours a couple of weeks back in the context of the post which the community found broadly offensive.
If Bragg can sue Linden Lab, it stands to reason that Woodbury University has more grounds. After all, the University itself is not implicated - a group named the Woodbury University Group has had members which Linden Lab has basically said are 'bad apples'. Well, did they ban the 'bad apples'? The group, which is not open enrollment at this time, may have bad apples...
But does that justify the removal of an island? Further, an island funded by Woodbury University itself? While the article hints that there are personal friendships with Philbert Rosedale and that personal relationship may be used to resolve the situation... what about the majority of people in Second Life who are not friends with Phil, the Prince of Insufficient Light?
Everyone friend Philip Linden quickly!
