Stop It! I'm Offended!
Sarah Nerd already hit the topic dead on about this idiotic post by [w:Linden Lab]: Keeping Second Life Safe, Together.
I'd feel all warm and fuzzy, but I don't know if that would be considered... offensive. It doesn't help that the blotter of resolved abuses doesn't expose precedents because it doesn't want to violate privacy. We don't want names - we want to know what was done wrong and whether it was punished. A few excerpts at the time of this writing:
Date: Thursday, May 31, 2007
Violation: Community Standards: Assault, Scripted Objects
Region: Wengen
Description: Assault with scripted objects.
Action taken: Warning issued.
OK - what were the scripted objects? What are the criteria for scripted objects?
Date: Thursday, May 31, 2007
Violation: Community Standards: Disturbing the Peace
Region: Waterhead
Description: Disturbing the peace.
Action taken: Suspended 3 days.
How, exactly, was the peace disturbed?
Oh - and my favorite (emphasis mine):
Date: Wednesday, May 30, 2007
Violation: Community Standards: Intolerance
Region: Waterhead
Description: Intolerance towards others.
Action taken: Warning issued.
Intolerance. So, by the Linden Lab entry - what is not tolerated will be abuse reported, what is abuse reported may or may not be an offense (we have no clue how to tell the difference), and...
Well, stop it Linden Lab. I'm offended by your lack of definition of offense.
Now start showing some transparency in the abuse report system, allowing the community established precedents... or are abuse reports handled so inconsistently that transparency might be an issue?
