The interface for land sales is obviously developed by technical people - not people who actually use the interface day to day.

Your solution is valid. Unfortunately, I doubt it would gain much traction - Linden Lab, historically, doesn't care too much about user experiences that include the loss of anything of fiscal value. I believe that they may actually have meetings where they laugh about it. But then I also lock my tapioca pudding in the refrigerator.
