Virtual Reality - New Steps in Stroke Rehabilitation

Sat, 07/19/2008 - 04:26
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA or stroke) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the USA; each year about 700,000 people sustain a stroke across the country. Based on the location and size of the lesion, there may be severe and permanent loss of function. The most significant residual effects of a CVA are related to paralysis (hemiplegia), speech disabilities (apraxia, aphasia), and neglect of the affected side. Unilateral neglect is a condition where the patient is unable to id

Worth Watching - July 19: Matthew McConaughey's Surfer Dude Trailer

Sat, 07/19/2008 - 00:56
Finally, "shirtless" Matthew McConaughey in a role that he was born to play! Surfer Dude is a laid back comedy about a surfer named Steve Addington who returns to his home in Malibu to find that virtual reality surfing is the new "in" thing when there are no waves. Don't think too much about that story, because I think the best way to enjoy this movie would be laid back and stoned out of your mind (note: we don't necessarily condone smoking of any type). Both Willie Nelson and Woody Harrelson

Tracking Soldiers

Fri, 07/18/2008 - 19:37
DARPA wants to electronically RFID tag US combat soldiers so they can then be swiftly found and rescued if they get into trouble. The “Individual Force Protection System“, is being persued by contractor Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). According to this presentation (pdf), given last year by DARPA officials, IFPS would consist of a small, three-inch lightweight tag attached to a soldier’s uniform and a variety of vehicle-borne or portable receivers. The tag does not

Virtual Voting: Finding Our Audience Where They Roam

Fri, 07/18/2008 - 10:18
(A Street Team '08 video by our Connecticut reporter plays at Election HQ in MTV's Virtual World.) One of the main components of Knight and MTV's big citizen journalism experiment, Street Team '08, is MOBILE. In our case, the already loaded term has many meanings...our project includes mobile phones, on both the production and distribution sides, and mobile journalists, or those young, carefree reporters-on-the-go with no need for an office, who you keep hearing about. But mobile takes on an

Relationship Reality: Are Your Relationships Based In Reality or Fantasy?

Fri, 07/18/2008 - 09:18
Within the next two to three minutes, you will uncover if you have had relationships based in reality or fantasy! I want you to recall a failed relationship and ask yourself one question, “Why didn’t it work?” Initially, you may answer, “They cheated, lied, changed, etc.” But be honest with yourself. Without honesty there cannot be any changes in your life. The truth may be you created a world in which this person could not live up too! “How is that possible,” is what you are thinking, “I wo

Deepak Chopra - More Woo from the Master

Fri, 07/18/2008 - 06:10
Writing for the Huffington Post (an online news outlet that regularly hosts pseudoscience and anti-vaccinationist ravings), Deepak Chopra seeks to inform us: Why the Paranormal is Normal. What he actually demonstrates is his ability to twist and abuse language in an attempt to distract and confuse his reader. At this verbal deception Chopra is truly the master. Language is important- words matter. Anyone who has studied a technical field should appreciate the need to use precise and unambiguou

The Universe Web

Fri, 07/18/2008 - 05:23
Since the announcement that IBM's OpenSim can talk to Second Life, I've been thinking again about RESTful Virtual Reality. I'm not the first, of course. Others have been motivated by the same goal: To bring the Web's scalability, linkability and interoperability into Virtual World platforms. Ultimately, how to use the same techniques as the Web to link Virtual Worlds together into a single, massive 'Virtual Universe'. Here's how I would architect the Universe Web... Entities The Un

Virtual Worlds are alot more than trying to sell products or mass market to avatars. Get beyond the ‘blingtardian” factor and you will find some amazing uses. For example a project I worked on TheWallSL was commissioned by someone w

Google Earth’s long time senior programmer, Wes Thierry, has left the company. He was the senior engineer for the client side of Google Earth and has helped the company in developing its software package for the application. Before Google, he served at Keyhole, the satellite mapping firm, which was acquired by the prior back in 2004. His blog reads: Well it’s done. I’ve cut the Google ship loose. Yesterday was my last day at Google. I gave them four years of my life, and it all started abo

Scientists decode brain farts

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 21:30
We’ve all goofed up and flubbed up things we’ve previously done time and again. It turns out the root of these brain farts may be a special kind of abnormal brain activity that begins up to 30 seconds before a mistake even happens. The solution to such screw-ups could be a kind of mind-reading hat, a device to predict and even prevent mindless errors that can threaten lives. When people blunder after performing the same task over and over, scientists had suspected that such lapses were due t

Sandpoint schools losing kids to virtual reality

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 21:08
Sandpoint public school enrollment down, chart, virtual, private schools swell. Home school parents use virtual schools for curriculum help. Parent: "Sometimes I'll quiz him on things while we're throwing the football back-and-forth. You can't do that in most classrooms." Part of a three-part series, but not much from the depressed "traditional" school people. David Gunter, Bonner County Bee.

SL Event: “Stepping into Literature: Bringing New Life to Books through Virtual Worlds”

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 19:29
Got this in my e-mail today. Very interesting how virtual worlds like SL are being adapted for educational purposes in multiple ways. I particularly like the “artist conceptions” of fictional locations recreated in SL, allowing folks the opportunity to virtually visit a work of fiction. On August 4th, 2008, and again on August 6th, Alliance Library System, in cooperation with LearningTimes, will offer a one-day conference exploring the possibilities of using virtual worlds to teach literature

Revive “Disney’s America” in Virginia!

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 16:59
In 1994, plans for “Disney’s America,” the proposed American history-based theme park that was set for Haymarket, Virginia in Prince William Co., were withdrawn – a little more than a year after they were first put forth publicly. Opposition based on the proximity of the park to the historic Manassas battlefields and concern over increased traffic on I-66 and in the surrounding area ultimately killed this project in PWC. Just a few years ago, Disney was considering a plan to purchase the Kn

Time Travel

Thu, 07/17/2008 - 16:14
We not only can do it, but we do it frequently. The manner in which we do it though is not physically; however, it can have some of the same consequences. Virtual reality is an amazing concept, but how much do we realize that what we are experiencing NOW (as Eckhart Tolle would remind us) is a product of mind travel? The principle is as old as Eccl. 3:15 and older of course. I would IMAGINE ( a key word) that most people would give a thumbs up (approve) to the fact that we are all a product
