Holiday Video - from other Worlds Holiday Video

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 19:36
I took a ‘break’ in over fifty worlds comprising the current metaverse, here is the holiday video… I ventured into fifty of them to review and sample the culture, creative, business and educational potential. On my travels I got out my virtual camera and decided to capture a bunch of small vignettes which quickly turned into a body of audio visual delights - so decided to create a nice seven minute video for posterity. With over 300 million frequenting or registering for the non-game based wo

BSG47 - VICE Combat Training

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 08:00
SLAMCentralStudios wrote: "BSG47 recently moved on to a physics-based combat system called VICE, which left the majority of pilots completely in the dark as to how to fight. This video was created from an IN-CHARACTER standpoint to rationalize and explain the changes, and teach old and new pilots alike how to adjust...." Thanks to Hamlet Au for the tip on this video.

Burning Life: A call for volunteers

Tue, 08/19/2008 - 01:24
BURNING LIFE 2008 September 27 - October 5 In 1999, an innovative man made the long trek from San Francisco to the sun-baked playa of an enormous, flat, dry lakebed in the Nevada high desert.  He went to attend the renowned Burning Man festival where, for one week each year, tens of thousands of people from around the world build art, camps and communities, and celebrate life. This man came back with new ideas for the virtual world he was planning; ideas about the nature of reality, creativi

Root Identity: Mesh Identity

Mon, 08/18/2008 - 21:00
I blame the terrorists. The movement to create national identity cards was given fuel by the attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent formation of the Department of Homeland Security. The “concept” is that by issuing government sponsored official identity documentation we would introduce a control point in the process of differentiating “us” from “them.” There is a lively debate about whether such a system could be spoofed to somehow allow “them” to acquire identity cards and pass themselves off as

Olive Garden v Playboy, J&J v Kids, Coke v Islam, Candidates v Second Life, iPhone Apps, The Internet

Mon, 08/18/2008 - 17:39
No Olive Garden Hospitaliano For Playboy’s Kendra Wilkinson Kendra Wilkinson, one of Hugh Hefner’s three girlfriends, is a huge fan of the Olive Garden. Though she is not paid by the chain, she talks about it on camera and this has led to a PR quandry for Olive Garden, when there is really no need for one… (tags: olivegarden playboy kendrawilkinson pr) J&J realizing kids need a kick in the pants “whether it’s your newborn’s more hardened appearance, the way he now approaches people with

Making the metaverse portable (with Plone)!

Mon, 08/18/2008 - 14:48
One idea which is bouncing around among people interested in data portability is to only have one user account and freely go from service to service, taking your data with you. No need to signup again and again, importing your data again and again, finding your friends again and again and all that jazz. This vision seems to be somewhat away in the field of social networks (but we are fighting for it) but in the field of virtual worlds we are moving with big steps towards this goal! Today we

Second Life Largely Ignored by Obama, McCain Campaigns

Mon, 08/18/2008 - 02:52
At one time, Second Life was viewed as having great potential for promoting political campaigns. However, the Houston Chronicle points out that in the current presidential election, Barack Obama and John McCain have largely ignored the SL metaverse: Campaigns haven't figured out how to reconcile the all-important image and fundraising with a world in which a Gothic nymph can sit in on a congressional hearing - or a Teddy bear might try to donate to a political campaign. So for now, the Second

What is a Virtual World?

Sat, 08/16/2008 - 10:43
Which reminds me… I got an email the other day that asked me if my comments in a recent interview indicated that Microsoft "was going to get into Virtual Worlds in a big way." I was somewhat taken aback, to be honest. Not to be overly ego-centric on behalf of my new employer, but by my standards, Microsoft is into Virtual Worlds in a big way already — consider Virtual Earth (mirror world), Halo 3 (multi-user worlds, with very good machinima/storytelling capabilities), and even MSN Messenger’s

Meet Me in Second Life?

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 20:36
Crap, looking like Death Warmed Over, Velouria, and Intlibber, rendering as a gray as if he had logged in from a public terminal. Yes, I have the special advanced top secret SL 3.0 browser (a copy was secretly sent to me by an inside source) that renders all Extropians as grey so you can stop the spread of their influence. My topic was kind of jumbled tonight, as I both wanted to discuss whether SL is really ready for -- or beneficial to -- business meetings, after getting some PR hype from

Google Lively's Mel Guymon To Keynote Worlds In Motion Summit

[I've been tangentially involved in helping set up speakers for Austin's Worlds In Motion Summit, and getting a Google Lively keynote is a neat capper to the program, which complements the existing Online Track at Austin and has also just had some new lectures added from folks like Klei's Jamie Cheng and Rebel Monkey's Margaret Wallace.] Think Services, organizers of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) have announced that Mel Guymon, product manager for Google Lively, will be presenting the o
