Second Life: On My iPhone Real Soon Now

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 19:09
Reuters/Second Life » Second Life on the Xbox/PS3/iPhone? Avatar Dusan Writer finds an interesting snippet of HTML code on search.secondlife.com which reads: “placeholer page for XBOX, PS3, and iPhone versions of client when they launch next real soon now” Now, we’re not banking on a Linden Lab-supported rollout of Second Life to game consoles and cell phones just yet. Veteran Second Life watchers may recall numerous incidents in which junior executives at Linden implemented policies the com

Popping my Head Up

The Slug (NSLU2-Debian), he be toast again (shortly after my last post, ironically). I’m fed up with the rather convoluted way that I have to connect to it, so I’m looking at just getting the smallest entry-PC you can get (a

Uptown top banking

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 12:04
According to the AvaStar, the banks are back, though only those that have been accredited by Linden Lab. Can anyone explain what the use-case is for using a Second Life bank? I can't really see why anyone would want to do so unless they are somehow able to offer better interest than I could reasonably get in RL. Am I being thick? Is it just to cater for residents that "do not have Paypal or a major U.S. credit card account in USD"? Quick experiment... LeeX (a European SL-accredited bank) is of

Business Class vs. Content Class Virtual Worlds

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 11:12
There's been growing interest by educators in MUVE's other than Second Life: OpenSim, Project Wonderland, Qwaq, Croquet etc. This past week, I (again) attended the Sled Roundtable that AJ Brooks (pictured left in suit, RL: AJ Kelton) hosts each Tuesday at Montclair State University (3:30 SLT). The focus of the discussion was Project Wonderland and other open grid/source alternatives to Second Life, and on short notice, Alan Levine (SL: CDB Barkley, pictured left in red) joined the group as a gue

Growing the DEN in SL

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 09:11
Growing the DEN in SL The high light for me at NECC was to meet the DEN in SL leadership council and some of our SL community and present with the LC. We only had an hour to share everything and we could not do it all. The list of links below takes you to video, and some posts about our session. If you were there or know of a post regarding it please leave a comment and share. One of the objectives of our session was to explain how we built our community in the Second Life ® environment. Any

Dorkbot

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 06:40
The Dorkbot session that has been arranged for 6 July 1:00 pm PDT / 22:00 CET at the Odyssey Simulator sounds good, particularly to people with an interest in machinima: JJ Ventrella (a.k.a. Ventrella Linden) will present the avatar puppeteering project. A project motivated to bring more expression to the avatar, by enabling a more fluid and direct way to manipulate the ‘physical avatar’. This is a Linden Lab project that unfortunetely was ‘put to sleep’ as Linden Lab decided to focus on the sta

Second Life and Club Penguin Among Fastest Growing UK Sites

Fri, 07/04/2008 - 00:54
New research from Nielsen tracks the top ten sites in the UK in average monthly minutes. There aren't any virtual worlds on the list--MSN Search, eBay, and Facebook take the top slots--but Club Penguin and Second Life make the up-and-coming list. Tracking their usage minutes from May 2007 to May 2008, Nielsen reports that Club Penguin grew 82% from 23 million minutes to 42 million while Second Life grew a whopping 137% from 125 million minutes to 296 million. I'm not sure, but I'm assuming tha

Doubledown's Dinky Rant - SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion

Thu, 07/03/2008 - 21:37
Continuing my approach to adjust my blog, I preset the first of many "Doubledown's Dinky Rants" ... a rant that may be mildly to severly unimportant ( with a sarcastic humorous tone ) but will also hopefully point out an underlining issue that may want to be considered for the future. SL5B Music in SL Panel Discussion was held June 23rd. .... I would have love to have told ya about it. In fact, I would have loved to have known about it. Unforunately I don't receive word until I find out about

Is Dubya secretly an online gamer? Nah, I'm kidding.

Thu, 07/03/2008 - 13:27
This week, someone with a "sociologist" tag logged into Second Life and teleported to my daughter's virtual coffee house to check out Open Mic Night for live musicians. It's interesting to note how someone would announce so publicly that he was there for research. I felt a little under the microscope, but after the first singer started to strum his guitar and sing over the streaming audio channel

Off to Japan and India

Well, the weather here has turned awful, so I better turn off my computer to avoid lightning-strike damage. For those looking for something to do to enjoy the "4th of July" US Independence day holiday tomorrow, there is the [Team America: Sing-a-long at Tucson's Loft Cinema at 6pm, you can still see the fireworks after the show is over. I did this last year and it was a lot of fun. Also, you can check out the IBM Wimbledon build on Second Life. Here's the SLURL: [http://slurl.com/secondlife/

[IDT] Workshop 4 Part 2

Thu, 07/03/2008 - 10:45
A new computer I skill that I learned while on Teen Second Life is rezing which is building objects and at first I only new how to make simple things such as squares and cones but as the days progressed I started to put simple prims together in order to construct more complex shapes and figures such as trees and houses. One more thing I learned to do was script objects which I think would be useful. One of the coolest experiences that I had with Teen Second Life was being a virtual Paleontolog
